Early Life and Education

Rosa Luxemburg was born in Zamość, Russian-occupied Poland, on March 5, 1871. She was the fifth child of middle-class Jewish parents. From an early age, Luxemburg displayed a sharp intellect and a deep passion for social justice. She studied philosophy, economics, and law at the University of Zurich, where she became involved in Marxist circles and developed her revolutionary ideas.

Revolutionary Activism and Theoretical Contributions

After graduating, Luxemburg returned to Poland and became an active member of the Polish Socialist Party (PPS). She played a leading role in organizing workers' strikes and protests, which brought her into conflict with the Russian authorities. In 1898, she was arrested and imprisoned for her revolutionary activities.

During her time in prison, Luxemburg wrote prolifically, developing her unique theories on imperialism, accumulation, and revolutionary strategy. Her writings laid the foundation for an alternative socialist perspective that challenged the dominant orthodoxies of the time. Luxemburg argued that capitalism was inherently expansionist and exploitative, and that it could only be overthrown through mass revolutionary action by the working class.

Leadership in the German Social Democratic Party (SPD)

In 1906, Luxemburg moved to Germany and joined the German Social Democratic Party (SPD). She became a leading figure in the SPD's left wing, known as the "Spartakusbund" (Spartacus League). Luxemburg's speeches and writings inspired countless workers and intellectuals, and she emerged as one of the most influential socialists of her time.

During World War I, Luxemburg strongly opposed the war and criticized the SPD's support for German militarism. She believed that the war was a product of imperialist rivalry and that it would lead to the destruction of the working class. Luxemburg's anti-war stance alienated her from the SPD leadership, and she was expelled from the party in 1914.

The Spartacus League and the German Revolution

In 1918, Luxemburg and other left-wing socialists founded the Spartacus League, which later evolved into the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). The Spartacus League played a leading role in the German Revolution of 1918-1919. Luxemburg and her comrades demanded the establishment of a socialist republic and the redistribution of wealth.

However, the Spartacist uprising was brutally suppressed by the German government. Luxemburg and other key leaders were arrested and murdered in January 1919.
