In the Boy Scouts of America, lesbians have long been invisible. Despite the organization's official policy of exclusion, lesbians have participated in Scouting for decades, often in secret. In Lesbians Reflect On Their Scouting Experience, a groundbreaking new book, 20 lesbians share their stories of coming out, discrimination, and harassment in the Boy Scouts.
The book is edited by Jen Boylan, a transgender woman who was a Scout in the 1980s. Boylan says that she hopes the book will help to raise awareness of the experiences of lesbians in Scouting and to challenge the Boy Scouts' policy of exclusion.
"Lesbians have always been a part of Scouting, even though we've been invisible," Boylan says. "This book is a way to make our voices heard and to challenge the Boy Scouts to change their policy."
The stories in Lesbians Reflect On Their Scouting Experience are varied and complex. Some of the women in the book came out as lesbians while they were still in Scouting, while others waited until they were adults. Some of the women faced discrimination and harassment from their fellow Scouts and leaders, while others were able to keep their sexual orientation a secret.
Despite the challenges they faced, the women in the book all say that Scouting played an important role in their lives. They learned valuable skills, made lasting friendships, and developed a strong sense of self-reliance. They also say that Scouting helped them to develop their leadership skills and to become more involved in their communities.
Lesbians Reflect On Their Scouting Experience is a powerful and moving book that sheds light on the experiences of lesbians in Scouting. The book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the history of Scouting, the experiences of LGBT people in Scouting, or the fight for equality.
