About the Author
Robin Behn was born in 1640 in London, England. Her father was a barber-surgeon, and her mother was a midwife. Behn was a precocious child, and she began writing poetry at a young age. In 1664, she married Thomas Behn, a wealthy merchant. However, the marriage was not a happy one, and the couple separated after only a few years. Behn then embarked on a career as a writer, and she quickly became one of the most popular poets of her time.
Behn's work is characterized by its wit, intelligence, and passion. She was a master of satire, and she often used her poetry to criticize the social and political mores of her time. Behn was also a pioneer in writing about women's experiences. She was one of the first women to write about female sexuality, and she often challenged the traditional roles that society assigned to women.
Behn died in 1689 at the age of 49. She was buried in Westminster Abbey, and her grave is marked with a simple inscription: "Here lies Robin Behn, the poet." Behn's work was largely forgotten for centuries after her death, but it has been rediscovered in recent years, and she is now considered one of the most important poets of the 17th century.
