This book tells the story of that evacuation, from the perspective of those who lived it. It is a story of heroism, resilience, and hope.
The Attacks
The attacks on September 11, 2001, were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda against the United States on the morning of September 11, 2001. The attacks resulted in 2,977 fatalities, over 25,000 injuries, and substantial long-term health consequences, in addition to at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage. The attacks were the deadliest terrorist acts in world history and the single deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States.
The attacks began at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) when American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767, crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03 a.m. EDT, United Airlines Flight 175, also a Boeing 767, crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. At 9:37 a.m. EDT, American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757, crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. At 10:03 a.m. EDT, United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757, crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania after some of the passengers and crew members attempted to regain control of the plane from the hijackers.

The evacuation was organized by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and the United States Coast Guard. Over 1,000 boats were used to evacuate over 500,000 people from Manhattan.
The evacuation was a success, and there were no major incidents.
